Attacks on Sotomayor expose Republican racism and hypocrisy

Photobucket

Back in 2001, during a lecture at the University of California-Berkeley, nominee for the US Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor, made a statement that has been seized upon by Republicans as evidence of racism.

Sotomayor said: "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

When Justice Alito talked about his American experience as a child of immigrants that was seen as a plus... a good thing. But when an American woman of Puerto Rican background suggests her personal experience may give her an edge in her profession she is branded by Republicans as a racist.

Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh labeled Sotomayor a "reverse racist." Former House speaker Newt Gingrich said - "Imagine a judicial nominee said 'my experience as a white man makes me better than a Latina woman' new racism is no better than old racism."

Some Republican critics have even stooped to attacking the Hispanic pronunciation of the judge's last name. Mark Krikorian writing in the National Review went so far as to propose she anglicise her name because "there ought to be limits" on the demand on English speakers to pronounce foreign names. This truly dumb objection says less about Sonia Sotomayor than the bigotry and small-mindedness of those conservatives who believe that the pronunciation of a name should be made a subject of debate in this case.

What is most surprising in all of this isn't so much the knee-jerk reactions of people like Coulter and Limbaugh who routinely come out with outrageous remarks. What is surprising are the number of conservatives who consider the slur to be a reasonable objection. The irony is inescapable. After all this is a party with a long history of playing the race card, particularly in the south.

The so-called "Southern Strategy" was all about race baiting and the use of coded racial language to attract the blue collar Southern white vote. Republican patron saint, Ronald Reagan, was as bad as George Wallace when it came to whipping up white discontent.

In an article titled "Lott, Reagan and Republican Racism" Jack White writing in Time magazine noted that:

"Then there was Reagan's attempt, once he reached the White House in 1981, to reverse a long-standing policy of denying tax-exempt status to private schools that practice racial discrimination and grant an exemption to Bob Jones University. "

For decades the Republicans have followed Nixon's lead in the south by pandering to disaffected whites angry about the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.

Bill Clinton put it this way: 'They try to suppress black voting, they ran on the Confederate flag in Georgia and South Carolina, and from top to bottom the Republicans supported it... It's time for the Republican Party to be held accountable for four decades of pandering to white racists, which began in 1968 with Richard Nixon's "Southern Strategy."

Aside from racist strategies on the part of the Republican party, there are numerous of examples of racism from the mouths of Republican representatives.

When Gingrich et al step out of the long historical shadow to accuse Sonia Sotomayor of being a racist, what is most remarkable is their sheer gall. No fair minded American, familiar with the background of judge Sotomayor, could possibly take them seriously.

Carolyn Forword: white SA actor's refusal to kiss black cast member sparks race row

Photobucket

A race row has erupted in South Africa over the refusal of a white Afrikaans actor to kiss a black cast member during a production of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

Carolyn Forword pulled out of the Cape Town based Riverside Theatre Company's production after 12 performances, leaving another actor to take her place for the remaining 50 shows scheduled.

Forword, 22, was required to lock lips with fellow cast member Unathi Dyantyi in the course of the performance but had a hard time delivering - she even pushed Dyantyi away on occasion. The reasons she gave for her reluctance-to-smooch, was that it was "unhygienic." She also said she thought kissing sent the wrong message to younger audiences.

Photobucket

Carolyn Forword

Not surprisingly, Dyantyi was offended by Forword's attitude, especially the bit about kissing him being "unhygienic". The kiss was simply a lip lock - no tongues involved. He described her comments as racially motivated... an accusation she denies.

He said he was made to feel "like a piece of shit" as a result of Forword's standoffish ways.

Dyantyi made the point that the kiss was integral to the performance. He said it also conveyed a message "that it's OK for different cultures to fall in love. We're a multicultural country and we're trying to convey that."

Photobucket

Unathi Dyantyi

Apparently Forword also had an issue with performing the play at her old school. Dyantyi got the impression that she was less than enthused about the idea because she didn't want her parents seeing her "being kissed by a black dude."

The director Leslie Ehrhardt, 42, said Forword told him that the kissing scene would 'not go down well with my people' - or words to that effect.

Forward attempted to defend her non-compliance on the intimacy front by claiming that kissing was unhygienic since it was 'a traveling show.' She didn't spell out the mysterious connection between locomotion and oral hygiene.

In the opinion of Ehrhardt there was no doubt that there was "a racial element" to Forword's kissing aversion. He noted that she would push Dyantyi away and screw up her face as though kissing him was the worst thing imaginable.

He said the theatre has been a vehicle for challenging racist views in South Africa, and expressed disappointment that an actor like Forword who had grown up in the post-apartheid era should adopt an attitude that led to a "horrible situation."

I suspect there's more to this story than news reports convey, but on one level this kissing spat seems rather juvenile and silly. Perhaps Forword is picky about who she puckers up for at the best of times, perhaps she prefers same-sex smooching... who knows. But those who witnessed the incidents have little doubt her actions were motivated by racism. This has raised questions about underlying racist attitudes in SA, particularly since the last place you would expect to run into it is in liberal arts circles. It also raises questions about Forword's professionalism.

Presumably when she agreed to take on the role she knew what it involved. Her reasons for not delivering don't come across as terribly convincing. Kids might find kissing - any kissing on-stage - yucky or amusing or even intriguing, but they're not likely to be traumatized by it. What might disturb them more is the sight of Forword screwing up her face and pushing Unathi Dyantyi away with apparent disgust.

As for her "hygiene" complaint, there are products available that also 'travel' so that doesn't come across as very convincing either.

A show that was in part about promoting racial harmony has become a talking point for unintended reasons. Forword vehemently denies her actions were racist and is complaining that "now I'm seen as a racist"... if there is something we're not getting in the coverage, she should clarify her position because as it stands more than a few people would add "for good reason."

Scientology under attack in France: double standard?

Recently in France a complaint was lodged by a woman who claims she was pressured by Scientologists into paying a large sum of money for lessons, books and medicines. The case has resulted in the Church of Scientology being placed on trial for fraud. This is unprecedented. Whereas in the past individual members of the church have been prosecuted in France, the church itself has not been required to appear as a defendant in a fraud case.

In France Scientology is viewed not as a religion, but as a sect or cult. A spokewoman for the church in said that it was being "hounded" by the French courts and that its members faced persecution.

The term "cult" is a controversial one because one person's "cult" is another person's religion. The criteria that is used to place Scientology in the cult category, could be used to label the Catholic Church the same way - it's just a matter of the perspective brought to bear on the question.

In France there is an official body with the title - mission interministerielle de vigilance et de lutte contre les dérives sectaires (MIVILUDES). It is tasked with protecting French citizens from being preyed upon by so-called cults... referred to in France as sects. The liberty-loving French apparently have no problem with this and are happy to know that official cult-busters are protecting them from the alleged menace within.

The targeting of Scientology in France raises questions about a double standard.

Child abuse and other criminal acts carried out by members of the Catholic priesthood hasn't resulted in the Catholic Church being placed on trial in France or anywhere else. But the Church of Scientology has been made a target - not for anything so abhorrent as systemic child abuse - but for alleged fraud by some individual members.

When you consider the finding of a recent commission in Ireland that provides extensive evidence of horrendous sexual abuse of children over many decades at the hands of Catholic priests and nuns, it makes you wonder what type of skewed thinking leads to the targeting of 'minority' non-traditional belief systems.

In France there have been many cases of similar crimes by Catholic clerics. For example the case of Francois Lefort of the Archdiocese of Paris - sentenced for the rape of six Senegalese minors. In truth the greatest catalog of such crimes exists not within non-traditional sects - but within the ranks of established religions.

Bishop Accountability.org has an alphabetical list of priests and other prelates who stand accused or who have been charged and sentenced. Check it out - it's like looking through the personnel file of a criminal organization rather than a church. Yet this is just the tip of the iceberg. Many of these crimes against children remain covered up and will never see the light of day. At least the Accountability.org site is stepping up to the plate and not engaging in the denial and obfuscation of the type Bill Donohue of the Catholic League indulged in an effort to minimize the impact of the Irish report.

In the French fraud case being brought against Scientology, the lawyers will claim that the plaintiff was the target of 'mental manipulation' - a charge Scientology denies. The lawyers will also argue that she was pressured into the use of scientifically dubious 'cures.'

How does any of this differ from the unscientific rites of the Catholic Church and its many unproven claims. And what about the saint 'cults' and pilgrimages to view the remains of the likes of Padre Pio? Not to mention the spin-off business in candles, statues, T'shirts and other paraphernalia that is part and parcel of the saint racket. Aren't disincentives such as purgatory, hell, communion-bans, excommunication etc a form of 'pressure' to ensure adherents comply with doctrine. Such pressure tactics arguably run counter to human rights - for example the right to birth control or a woman's right to an abortion.

Aside from the cult-like attributes of Catholicism, what about the showbiz-like tactics of televangelists and self-proclaimed healers such as Benny Hinn. Many of these preachers amass great wealth by playing on the suggestibility of the people who throng into their mega-churches. How is any of this any less objectionable than the methods allegedly used by non-traditional sects to promote their message and attract new members?

We live in an age of rapid change. Our outlook is more global than it has ever been and along with that there has come a shift in belief systems. The French sociologist Raphael Liogier has said that "we are witnessing a multiplication of confessions."

State-sanctioned efforts to damn alternative belief systems as "cults" is really the witch hunter's mentality in a modern guise. Pressure tactics, mental manipulation and unscientific claims aren't exclusive to some non-traditional sects... they can be found also in mainstream religion.

Is Berlusconi 'unwell' as Veronica Lario claims?

Photobucket

Speculation about the nature of Italian premier Berlusconi's relationship with a teenager named Noemi Letizia, has prompted the Italian paper Repubblica to pose 10 questions for the premier.

The premier's wife, Veronica Lario has stated that her husband "consorts with minors." She also said that he is "unwell" and needs help.

Who better to know the inside scoop than Lario. Doubtless she has channels for keeping informed about her husband's various activities. It is unlikely she would throw around a term like "minors" and refer to her husband being "unwell" unless she had good reason for going there. She has too much at stake to make such statements lightly.

Berlusconi appears to have an odd compulsion to say things in public that are outlandish. To call his behavior "charming" or "mischievous" is misleading. There is nothing charming about a comment he made when he visited Abruzzo following the devastating earthquake.

A video shows Berlusconi posing with a group of firemen in front of a damaged church. There is only one woman present and Berlusconi says "can I feel up the lady a bit". Say what? Not only is there nothing "charming" about this comment... given the tragic circumstances, it's actually rather creepy.

Where does Berlusconi get off thinking he can make a suggestion like that about a complete stranger... someone's wife or sister. He was with the firemen, so maybe he wanted to show-off to amuse the guys. He gets a charge from saying these things... gets off on the reactions. Plus its another way to piss off the left and the feminists.

He's a bit like an exhibitionist who can't control his urge to flash. He may not be wearing a rain mac with nothing underneath, but he exhibits a similar compulsion to draw attention to himself and his "playboy ways" by making comments that draw shocked reactions.

Actually saying shocking and outrageous things can show a stroke of originality, even come off as hilarious depending on the situation. It's just that Berlusconi manages to be clumsy and inappropriate most of the time.

Not so long ago following a proposal to deploy 30,000 Italian troops to help fight crime, Berlusconi said that Italian women are so beautiful they need military escorts to avoid being raped. The comment stirred outrage, despite Berlusconi's lame claim that his comment was "a compliment" to Italian women.

In 2005, he boasted that he used his "playboy tactics" on president Tarja Halonen of Finland to ensure her backing to host the European Food Safety Authority. Really adolescent stuff.

The manner in which Berlusconi's idiosyncrasies are tolerated in Italy is reminiscent of the way the Romans put up with the often bizarre activities of their emperors. If Berlusconi had the free rein of say a Tiberius, it would probably be party time at Palazzo Chigi every day.

How far did it go with Noemi Letizia? Who knows. Repubblica's set of ten questions for the premier includes: "Veronica Lario reported that her husband goes out with minors. Are there other minors whom the prime minister meets?"

So far Berlusconi has been more defensive than informative.

Eurovision: Peter Tatchell and others at gay protest arrested

Photobucket

Police in Moscow have broken up a gay rights protest staged to coincide with the final of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Campaigners gathered near a university and called for gay rights in Russia. They also condemned the treatment of gays and lesbians.

Between 35 and 40 Russian LGBT activists have been arrested, including British human rights activist Peter Tatchell and Chicago LGBT activist Andy Thayer. Pride organiser Nikolai Alekseev was held down by 5 fully armed riot police and arrested.

Photobucket

European Embassy diplomats witnessed the violence are said to be planning a joint diplomatic action.

Slavic Pride organizers have called on the artists and performers of Eurovision to boycott tonight’s showpiece event in solidarity with the beaten and arrested protesters.

Organiser Nikolai Alekseev said:

“I call upon all of the artists who are due to perform at tonight’s Eurovision to boycott tonight’s event and send a message that Russia’s state oppression of human rights is not acceptable.

“The Russian Government is using this years Eurovision in Moscow as a gala showpiece to show the world how far the country has improved since the early 1990’s. However, what was witnessed this afternoon on the streets of Moscow shows the world just how little Russia has travelled when it comes to supporting fundamental human rights.

“The police brutality that we witnessed here this afternoon is shocking. We planned a peaceful march to highlight the dire state of LGBT rights in Russia today. The police, given violent legitimacy by the openly homophobic Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov, did not hold back with their weapons, despite the world’s media watching.

“We were defending the often violated human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Russians. We demand the same legal protection against discrimination and hate crimes that none LGBT people enjoy.

“This episode has shamed the Russian Government and Moscow authorities before the world.”

There have been numerous attacks on the gay community in Russia - clubs have been targeted in some cases. Gay and lesbian people risk being fired by their employers and shunned by their families.

Meanwhile a demonstration by nationalist and religious groups elsewhere in the capital experienced no problems with the police.

The double standard isn't surprising. The Moscow mayor Yuri Luzkhov has described gay parades as "satanic" and routinely bans them.

Ksawery Knotz: sex guide for Catholics

Ksawery Knotz

A Polish monk named Ksawery Knotz has published a sex guide titled "Sex as you don't know it: For married couples who love God." It has proved very popular in Poland. The first 5,000 copies were snapped up and it has gone to reprint.

Knotz resides at the monastery of the Friars Minor Capuchin in Stalowa Wola, southern Poland. He has become a sort of ecclesiastical sexpert, with retreats that attract thousands of devout Roman Catholic couples seeking to improve their sex lives.

It's hard not to be skeptical about a celibate monk who has become a sex guru to thousands. But Knotz is unphased by detractors who say a celibate has no experience in sexual matters. He offers the defense that a surgeon doesn't have to have a heart condition to be a cardiologist.

When Knotz is chatting with couples about the joys of 'theological orgasm', it must require Spock-like detachment to safeguard against "sinful" thoughts. Could this lead to a conflict-of-interest from a Christian point-of-view?

Catholic zealots plagued with 'urges' have for centuries resorted to various stratagems to keep sexual thoughts at bay - including the use of flagellation and other mortifications. Knotz on the other hand doesn't just entertain sexual thoughts, he uses graphic language to get the message across.

"Every act — a type of caress, a sexual position — with the goal of arousal is permitted and pleases God... During sexual intercourse, married couples can show their love in every way, can offer one another the most sought after caresses. They can employ manual and oral stimulation."

Even though Knotz' sex advice is surprisingly explicit, he is no revolutionary. He follows traditional Catholic teaching. For example he is opposed to the use of condoms and birth control pills. In his view condoms might "lead a Catholic couple outside of Catholic culture and into a completely different lifestyle."

It's hard not to suspect an ulterior motive. The Pope has long been complaining about what he sees as the plague of the secular lifestyle, which he associates with abortion, use of condoms etc. From that perspective Knotz' is on-side with Vatican priorities - revving up traditional Catholic marriage in the face of increasingly secular attitudes.

Knotz' more esoteric theories on sex are neither new nor novel. They just haven't traditionally been associated with Catholicism. Some of his views are similar to ideas found in Tantra - for example the statement: “Love between a married couple expressed in sex, brings the human body closer to heaven. The ecstasy in the joy of sexual intercourse can be likened to the joy of eternal life.”

He talks about 'theological orgasm' being like 'meeting God in Heaven.' This rather cheesy metaphor reflects a naivety that lies behind some of Knotz' thinking on 'spiritual' sex.

Despite his novel sex advice, Knotz' view of sexuality is traditional. It stays firmly within a Catholic conjugal setting - and along with that comes a rejection of sex outside marriage, gay sexuality, birth control and abortion.

Traditionalist Catholic views are being challenged not only by non-Catholic critics, but also by those within the church - especially when it comes to issues relating to sexuality and orientation. Ksawery Knotz re-enforces conventional ideas even as he claims to be offering up the recipe for a racier sex life.

LAPD brutality: man kicked in head by cop after chase

Photobucket

A police chase in LA turned into a foot chase when a suspect crashed his vehicle.

An officer can clearly be seen on the video kicking suspect, Richard Rodriguez, 23, after Rodriguez voluntarily lay spreadeagled on the ground, face down.

The incident was captured by news coptors that were following the chase.

The cop came at the suspect as though intent on converting a penalty. The kick was vicious and clearly targeted Rodriguez' head.

Photobucket

Photobucket

In another frame a different cop can be seen punching Rodriguez in the side.

The penalties for casual police brutality often amounts to little more than a slap on the wrist. The officer in question couldn't have been too worried about consequences since he hauled off and booted Rodriguez in the head with news coptors overhead.

The kicker and another cop sure didn't look concerned about their conduct when they celebrated their take-down with a high five.

The American Civil Liberties Union has called for the immediate suspension of the officer who kicked Rodriguez. It has also called on the Los Angeles County District Attorney to conduct a full and thorough investigation.

ACLU executive director, Ramona Ripson said:

This video is truly chilling in the clarity with which it captures an egregious example of police abuse.

Whatever the suspect may have done to justify his arrest, punishment in our system of justice is meted out by courts following fair trials, not by lone officers inflicting physical beatings as they see fit.

Miss California: Satan was testing me

Photobucket

Carrie Prejean showed up Monday on something called Focus on the Family and explained to evangelist James Dobson what was really going on behind-the-scenes at the Miss USA contest when she got hit with the big question.

She says the same-sex marriage question was no less than the work of the devil. That would make Perez Hilton no less than an agent of Satan.

Prejean told Dobson that the question was an attempt to try and tempt her to disown traditional marriage - or what she refers to as "opposite" marriage.

Her struggle with Satanic temptations during the Miss USA contest notwithstanding, Prejean isn't exactly a paragon of Christian virtue. But she hasn't allowed that minor detail to get in the way of her crusading efforts on behalf of traditional marriage.

Semi-nude pics have surfaced (and continue to surface) - pics she lied about because they could have proved a liability. This hasn't stopped her from presenting herself as the Christian family values gal.

This is how she explained her brush with Satan to Dobson:

Dobson: Why did you give the answer you did with regard to the affirmation of marriage?

Prejean:... I felt as though Satan was trying to tempt me in asking me this question. And then God was in my head and in my heart saying, "Do not compromise this. You need to stand up for me and you need to share with all these people . . . you need to witness to them and you need to show that you're not willing to compromise that for this title of Miss USA."

Doesn't Satan have anything better to do with his time than hang around at a cheesy beauty contest in order get Miss California to betray her family conditioning? After all she didn't say she was opposed to same-sex marriage because she thought it through and reached that conclusion, she said she was opposed to same-sex marriage because of how she was raised. Yes well, people are raised to do and believe many things that are wrong or even wildly wrong and bringing "Satan" into it is beside the point. People do a great job at deluding themselves.

Eurovision: gay march scheduled in Moscow

Photobucket

The Eurovision Song Contest is being held in Moscow this weekend. Gay activists plan to hold a Slavic Pride march to coincide with the contest.

Moscow city officials have warned that they will break up the march.

There is a concern that the march might be targeted by anti-gay extremists. The British Foreign Office has released an advisory for travelers in Russia, warning of possible violence at the gay march this weekend.

During the 2007 march gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell was among those who were attacked by right-wing extremists. The German politician with the Greens, Volker Beck, was also assaulted and sustained facial injuries.

Nikolai Alexeyev, who runs the website Gay Russia, tries each year to get a permit for the peaceful gay and lesbian march, but he has run into official roadblocks.

US journalist Roxana Saberi: new details emerge

Photobucket

American journalist Roxana Saberi has been released from Evin prison in Tehran.

New details have emerged about why she was arrested in the first place under suspicion of being a spy.

Her lawyer, Saleh Nikbakht, said the arrest was in part because she had in her possession a confidential Iranian government document about the US war in Iraq.

She obtained the document while working as a freelance translator for the Expediency Council, a powerful body connected to Iran's ruling clerics. Part of the role of the body is to mediate between the legislature, the presidency and ruling clerics in the course of constitutional disputes.

During Sunday's appeal session, Saberi admitted being in possession of the document which she said she copied out of "curiosity," but said she didn't share with American officials.

Another reason given by her lawyer for the arrest, was a trip made by Saberi to Israel in 2006. Iranian citizens are banned from visiting Israel.

Saberi apologized for her actions and the court reduced the charges against her from espionage to possessing confidential documents.

Saberi's parents were delighted by her release. Her father, Reza Saberi, said Roxana "was not tortured at all" while in custody. Speaking outside Evin prison he said "She is in very good condition. We are very happy that they gave us such a break."

Saberis,Evin prison,Tehran

Reza and Akiko Saberi waiting outside
Evin prison, Tehran, for Roxana's release

Ms Saberi, if a little thinner after her hunger strike, seems in good spirits.

She moved to Iran six years ago and has worked as a freelance journalist for a number of organizations including NPR and BBC.

Saberi's release is being credited in some Iranian circles to the intervention of Iranian president Ahmadinejad. He wrote to the country's judiciary chiefs, saying that she should be given full rights of defence and appeal.

The leniency accorded Saberi hasn't pleased everyone. Some Iranian websites have complained about the decision.

The conservative website Tabnak said: "How come, after a few angry remarks from Obama and Hillary Clinton – expressed after their diplomatic smiles – Roxana Saberi turned from being a spy to a free citizen, while Iranian diplomats are still held in Iraq?"

Tehran-based journalist Iraj Jamshidi sees the decision as a possible sign of a new opening. He said: "The [fact that the] appeals court took place very quickly and issued its verdict within 24 hours could be interpreted as an indication of the Islamic republic's interest to open serious negotiations with the United States..."

The move by Ahmadinejad comes before an election. With many voters hoping for improved relations with the US, his intervention may be seen as a goodwill gesture at a crucial juncture in US/Iran relations.

Berlusconi rejects 'multi-ethnic Italy' idea

Photobucket

Silvio Belusconi has responded to criticism of his government's decision to send 200 "boat people" back to Libya, by saying that his party rejects the idea of a "multi-ethnic" Italy.

The decision to return refugees to Libya without opportunity to apply for asylum conforms to the intolerant thinking that is increasingly a feature of Italian governance.

Whether Berlusconi likes it or not, Italy has become increasingly multi-ethnic, especially urban centers that attract large numbers of immigrants. These migrants form a vital part of Italy's workforce.

His scorn of a multi-ethnic Italy draws an unspoken distinction between diversity which is "acceptable" and diversity which is not.

The German speaking communities of Trentino/Alto Adige, Aosta valley and elsewhere that hold to their traditional heritage bring a multicultural flavor to Italian life, but you don't hear Berlusconi making noises about this. He and his political allies have a problem with too many Africans, too many gypsies, too many Muslims. On the part of some with an anti-immigrant platform these prejudices reflect xenophobic priorities... or more bluntly, racism.

Berlusconi's remarks drew a sharp reaction. Center-left leader Dario Franceschini said "It's not for me or Berlusconi or anyone else to decide, for this will be the century of multi-ethnic societies... France, Great Britain and Germany are European nations with far more immigrants than us but they've worked for integration."

The premier's comments were also criticized by Leoluca Orlando of the Italy of Values party who said Berlusconi's government risked returning "to the days of Nazi fascism."

Giovanna Melandri of the Democratic Party said it wanted "a country in which color of skin, race and religion do not count."

Xenophobic attitudes in Italy are unfortunately quite common. Having a gaffe-prone joker at the helm distracts from the seriousness of this problem. When the Northern League's Matteo Salvini came out recently and proposed segregated seating on local public transport in Milan, Berlusconi refused to condemn his comments, passing off Salvini's remarks as just "a quip"... "a provocation."

There are other examples of the trend toward intolerance in Italy... here and here.

Arthur Kemp: BNP activist linked to Chris Hani's killer

Photobucket

Far-right activist Arthur Kemp who runs the British National Party's (BNP) merchandising arm, Excalibur, had a link to the killer of ANC leader Chris Hani.

Hani was gunned down by a Polish anti-Communist named Janusz Walus in the racially mixed suburb of Boksburg, SA, on April 10, 1993. The assassination was part of a right-wing plot to derail the negotiations to end apartheid.

Kemp, along with a number of other people were arrested in connection with the murder.

Kemp was in possession of a list of names that had the appearance of a "hitlist". Nelson Mandela was the first entry, Chris Hani was number three. Information drawn from the list of names was found at the home of Janusz Walus.

Photobucket

Chris Hani

During the trial Kemp admitted to producing the list of names, but denied knowingly supplying a hitlist. He was eventually released without charge. He moved to the UK in 1996.

Kemp joined the BNP and is currently regarded as a key policy adviser to party leader Nick Griffin. He also helps to edit the party's website.

You don't have to look far for evidence of Kemp's racist beliefs. He is the author of March of the Titans: A History of the White Race - a ridiculous book that includes Cro-Magnon Man and Nefertiti as representatives of the white race. Pseudo-scholar Kemp clearly associates whiteness with civilization, and believes that the breakdown in "racial homogeneity" spells the end of his racist version of civilization.

Kemp worked for Die Patriot, a newspaper associated with the extremist South African Conservative party. Articles by Kemp have also appeared on the Stormfront website, run by Don Black, a former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.

According to the anti-fascist website Searchlight, the heaviest traffic to the BNP website comes from South Africa. It says that the BNP is targeting wealthy white South Africans for donations.

Searchlight: "Many of them may be friends and relations of the growing number of South African BNP members, of whom Arthur Kemp, editor of the BNP website and in charge of the ideological training of the party's 250 or so elite activists, is the most prominent."

The BNP has been attempting to present itself as a mainstream party in the run-up to the Euro elections in which the party is hoping to secure its first MEP.

Kemp's connections give the lie to their 'mainstream' aspirations, as do recent racist comments by leader Griffin who said that black and Asian Britons "do not exist" and should be described as "racial foreigners."

Stormy Daniels: porn star challenges David Vitter

david vitter,stormy daniels,louisiana senate race

Earlier this year an ad showed up on Craigslist asking for "a female in some aspect of the adult entertainment industry" to run against David Vitter - the 'sinator' from Louisiana.

Not long after the ad appeared, DraftStormy.com showed up on the net - part of the effort to "draft" porn star Stormy Daniels to take on Vitter in the upcoming Louisiana Senate race.

Unlike Vitter who was caught with his pants down, despite his front as a family values defender, Stormy Daniels can't be accused of being a hypocrite

Daniels isn't affiliated with a political party. She claims she's serious about a possible run and is spending her own money on a "listening tour" with the slogan "Stormy Daniels: Screwing People Honestly."

Photobucket

Daniels at a New Orleans restaurant

The campaign to draft a porn star has had the spin-off effect of highlighting Vitter's past connections with "DC Madam" Deborah Jeane Palfrey. There have been suggestions that the Louisiana Democratic Party might be behind the draft Stormy move - a suggestion they deny.

Although Daniels does have a set of causes that include bringing the troops home from Iraq sooner rather than later, its hard not to suspect that her appearance has as much to do with boosting her image and sales appeal as an adult entertainment star as it does with politics.

At a recent meet-and-greet she quipped "Don't get too close or you might have to start tipping me."

Her well publicized appearance at this juncture puts sex front and center where you can't miss it. It jogs the memory of any who might have forgotten that the 'sinator' didn't just cheat on his wife, he paid for prostitutes - a criminal act. He was also into diapers as it turns out... earning him the dubious nickname "Diaper Dave."

Vitter's sexual activities are one thing - the larger issue is the hypocrisy involved and the people who were hoodwinked by his act.

He was outed when his phone number showed up on a published list of phone records belonging to Pamela Martin and Associates, a company that was run by Deborah Jeane Palfrey.

There followed the usual televised ritual of public confession and contrition. With his wife at his side, Vitter owned up to "serious sin"- the details of which remain between himself, the family and God.

David Vitter

David Vitter and wife

Vitter also apologized to his Republican colleagues and at one point received a standing ovation from his GOP backslappers.

This reception was the height of hypocrisy when you consider the remorseless attacks by Republicans on Bill Clinton over the Lewinsky affair. David Vitter was one of the many Republicans who pointed the finger at Clinton. He even had the gall to describe Clinton as "morally unfit to govern."

It takes a lot in Louisiana to knock down a politician for infidelity - even for soliciting prostitutes. In some circles there is a cynical tolerance for politicians who stray. One state governor said that Vitter would only lose if he was “caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."

Vitter has been busy trying to salvage his reputation by getting behind conservative legislation. He was one of the sponsors of the Marriage Protection Amendment. He teamed up with foot-tapping washroom pick-up artist Senator Larry Craig to support legislation that is essentially anti-gay.

It's easy to kid around about Vitter and the emergence of a porn star challenger, but there is a serious side that can get overlooked. One of the most impassioned appeals I've read came from a native of Louisiana who uses the nick "BayouBorn":

To sum it up-- I blame the Democrats for letting this BS get this far, and not having a viable candidate up-and-running to take out the Dean of Distractions and Delays- David Vitter. I blame the Republicans for not having a primary to get rid of their DV problem themselves, and even letting the prospect of our state being made a national spectacle for the egos of both of these individuals... We have had more than enough rogues, and scalley-wags in our political history . A returning carpet-bagger ( yes, I know they came from the North after the Civil War), with a plunging neck line from a sister Southern State is not needed!!

Vitter needs a serious challenger. Even though the appearance of Stormy Daniels throws negative attention on Vitter and even though she has staked out positions on some issues, it will take a heavier hitter than Stormy to get in the way of Vitter and his re-election ambitions.

Berlusconi ally calls for segregated public transport in Milan

Milan,subway

A representative of Italy's anti-immigrant Northern league - Berlusconi's main ally in government - has called for racial segregation of trains, trams and buses in Milan.

Matteo Salvini, the league's secretary in Milan, announced that he wants "seats and carriages reserved for the Milanese" on local transport.

Matteo Salvini,Northern League,Italy

Matteo Salvini

Salvini said - “The proposal to set aside seats for Milanese travellers could be implemented in a few years’ time."

He went on to say: “I’ve been using Milan’s public transport for twenty years. Given the general atmosphere of arrogance, rudeness and violence, if nothing is done about it, in ten years’ time there’ll be seats reserved for the Milanese and decent people, the way there once were for war veterans, invalids and pregnant women. If we don’t lay down limits for immigration, that’s what it will come to”.

Pierfrancesco Majorino of the Democratic Party said Salvini's proposal was "Ku Klux Klan material."

Democratic Party leader, Dario Franceschini, said "One's thoughts go back to the affair of Rosa Parks, the black woman who refused to give up her place on the bus and inspired Martin Luther King's struggle."

Salvini tried to play down his comments by saying it was "just a provocation." Berlusconi defended him by saying "... it was a quip, a provocation."

But anyone who has followed Italian politics over the past few years knows that such measures are taken entirely seriously by the extremists in the Northern League. It's just a question of how much they can get away with.

The growing intolerance in Italy even extends to ethnic foods. Not long ago in Lucca the local council banned any new ethnic food outlets from opening up. The campaign against ethnic food spread to Lombardy and to the capital Milan. The promoters claim that they want to "protect local specialties from the growing popularity of ethnic cuisines.” Link here to "Gastronomic Racism."

As for Matteo Salvini's wish to regress to the era of segregation - Italian president, Giorgio Napolitano, spoke of a worrying increase in intolerance and the Italy of Principles party called on the government to disown the idea publicly.

Stephen Morgan arrest: 'kill Johanna' threat in journal

Stephen Morgan,court,Wesleyan shooter

Stephen P. Morgan, accused in the slaying of Wesleyan student Joanna Justin-Jinich, was arrested Thursday night.

Morgan stopped by a convenience store in Meridien, about 10 miles from Wesleyan University. When he saw his photo in a newspaper, he decided to give himself up.

He asked the store clerk - who at the time had no clue who Morgan was - to call the police.

He was arrested a short time later outside the store.

Morgan and Justin-Jinich had known each other since at least 2007 when they both attended New York University. That same year Justin-Jinich filed a complaint against Morgan accusing him of calling her repeatedly and sending insulting emails.

One email included the warning: "You're going to have a lot more problems down the road if you can't take any fucking criticism Joanna."

They were both interviewed by university police, but Justin-Jinich decided not to press charges.

Johanna Justin-Jinich

An AP report states that an eye witness to the shooting, Susan Gerdhart, 22, told police she was paying for a salad in the cafe when she heard four loud popping noises. She turned to see smoke in the air and faced the suspect who fired three more shots, according to the warrant.

Gerdhart noticed that a female behind the counter was no longer standing and that the shooter was standing over the counter with his gun pointed downward.

When police responded to the scene they found the victim moaning and shaking on the floor. They recovered seven shell casings at the scene.

After the shooting, Morgan used a pulley system similar to a dumb waiter, to get from the main floor of the bookstore to the basement. He ditched his wig and gun before leaving the building.

It turns out the cops actually stopped Morgan - took down his name and contact information - then let him go.

Morgan abandoned his red 2001 Sentra near the bookstore. Police found a handgun case in the car lying partly open and two handgun magazines. A journal was also found that contained Morgan's plan to rape and kill Justin-Jinich.

Morgan had an additional plan to go on a campus shooting spree. His targets were Wesleyan students and members of the Jewish community.

One entry included the following: "I think it okay to kill Jews and go on a killing spree... Kill Johanna. She must Die" - according to an arrest warrant released Friday.

Ms Justin-Jinich came from a Jewish family. Her grandmother was a Holocaust survivor.

Johanna Justin-Jinich: Wesleyan student shot dead in bookstore cafe

stephen Morgan,shooter,Wesleyan

A student attending Wesleyan University, Johanna Justin-Jinich, was shot to death Wednesday in the cafe where she worked. The Red and Black cafe is located in a popular bookstore named Broad Street Books, not far from campus.

The cops have ID'd the alleged gunman as 29-year old Stephen Morgan. He has no known connection to the university and it is unclear where he lives.

Morgan was captured on videotape walking through the store holding a handgun. According to police he was wearing a wig at the time of the attack.

He shot Ms Justin-Jinich several times at point-blank-range. She was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

Police retrieved seven shell casings at the scene. A gun and wig were also recovered, although the weapon hasn't been conclusively tied to the shooting as yet.

The shooter fled into the busy downtown area.

Police have issued a warning to the public to be extra-vigilant. They say they found evidence at the scene that has "heightened our level of concern", but wouldn't release further details.

MSNBC reports that Morgan may have met Johanna Justin-Jinich at New York university in 2006. There is also a report that the victim filed a complaint concerning Morgan with the New York Police Department on July 10, 2007, claiming that Morgan called her repeatedly and sent her insulting emails for at least a week. One email included the threat that she would have "a lot more problems down the road."

Police working on the case have released information that Morgan may have been targeting the Jewish community. A member of the university administration who spoke with the media said he believes Ms Justin-Jinich was Jewish. He speculated that the shooter's anger may have extended beyond the victim to the Jewish community at large.

Middleton police chief Lynn Baldoni said:

"Evidence uncovered overnight suggests that Mr. Morgan may be focused on the Wesleyan University campus as well as the Jewish community... Investigators have been in contact with Wesleyan University and leaders of the Jewish community, urging both to be extra vigilant."

A guy named Jim Howes was in the store when the shooting occurred. He said: "I was standing near a bookshelf when I heard what sounded like the pop of firecrackers so it was really odd. Moments later I heard screaming. A girl came rushing out saying, 'There is someone in the store with a gun.'''

According to people who knew Ms Justin-Jinich, she was an unlikely target for this type of attack. A junior at the university, David Burke, described her as "...overwhelmingly nice, very laid back, soft spoken.”

A sophomore named Michael Battle said: "I was really shocked, because she’s such an innocent girl that no one would have a vendetta against her.”

After the shooting several young women gathered at the police line, a number were distressed and crying. They said they were friends of the victim but declined to talk to reporters.

Noemi Letizia's party: pics of 'papi' Berlusconi doctored?

Photobucket

Italian premier Berlusconi with his wife, Veronica Lario

When Veronica Lario announced recently that she is going to divorce Silvio "papi" Berlusconi, she said she could no longer stay with a man who "frequents minors."

Berlusconi's eye for younger women is well known. A couple of recent developments likely helped to convince Ms Lario to go public with her intention to seek a divorce.

Berlusconi's People of Freedom coalition has considered putting up a group of women candidates for the European elections in June. A number of these individuals are best known for a certain tabloid fame and good looks. They include a former Big Brother contestant and Miss Italy contender. This offended Ms Lario, who described the choice of candidates as "shamelessly trashy."

The other source of friction was the attendance of the 72-year old premier at the 18th birthday party of an aspiring actress and model, Noemi Letizia.

Ms Letizia recently revealed that she calls the premier"papi" (Daddy). Her father is a friend of Berlusconi, so it could be described as a term of endearment. It also came to light that the premier presented Ms Letizia with a gold necklace and pendant for her birthday.

Photobucket

Noemi Letizia
with an autographed photo of "papi"

Whisperings about what else, if anything, might have been going on appear to have prompted Berlusconi's office to try and get ahead of speculation by releasing a set of photos showing the premier at the birthday party in question.

The pics show a rather wooden looking "papi". Except for the first photo in the group, there are no trademark flashes of the pearly whites - just a rather insipid smile.

The pics have a doctored look. As a Guardian article points out, a good number of web commentators have their suspicions about the photos:

"... Italian-language blogs and forums were today alive with doubts as to their authenticity. La Repubblica's website said Berlusconi's image appeared to have been pasted into at least three of the photographs."

In one group shot an outsize hand resembling a large anaemic crab, is perched on or slightly above, Berlusconi's shoulder. The position looks unnatural and when the hand is magnified it looks even less convincing.

Close up of the odd looking hand:

In other pics a much younger looking, wrinkle-free premier looks as though he has been teleported into position with the same rather sickly smile frozen on his face. You half expect to see a speech bubble with "Beam me up Scottie."

In two of the pics it's like looking at clones - his facial expression and smile appear to be close to identical in both pictures.

Photobucket

The photos were released presumably to reassure the concerned that nothing untoward was going on at Ms Letizia's party The photos themselves are real enough. They were taken by the premier's own photographer. But the 'enhancements' certainly make them more entertaining.

You can also link here to a Guardian article that discusses some of the doubts that have been raised about the photos.

Massacre at Turkish wedding ceremony: 44 dead

Turkey,wedding

Forty-four people were killed in an attack on a wedding party in the village of Bilge Koyu in southeastern Turkey. Most of the dead are reported to be women and children.

According to Ahmet Ferhat Ozen, governor of Mardin, masked men stormed into the hall where wedding guests were assembled and launched an attack with automatic fire and hand grenades.

The attackers entered homes in the course of the shooting rampage. A 19 year-old woman who survived, said that women and children were herded into a room in one of the homes and sprayed with bullets.

Two girls managed to survive by lying underneath the bodies of friends who had been shot.

Ahmet Can, who took the body of a nephew to a hospital said it was a horrific scene: "You could not believe your eyes, it is unbelievable."

Stills from video footage after the attack:

The assault occurred during the wedding of the daughter of a former village official named Cemil Celebi. The bride and groom were killed along with the groom's mother and sister - according to the news agency AP.

It is believed that the attack was the result of a dispute between families. Some media outlets reported a "blood feud" - not uncommon in an area where tribal rivalries often lead to conflicts. Other reports have pointed to a possible feud between groups of pro-government village guards.

The 70,000 village guard force has often proved to be a problem for the government. The Turkish military has purged thousands of guards suspected of favoring the Kurdish rebels in their fight for autonomy in the southeast. Guards have also been arrested for drugs and weapons smuggling.

The army sealed off Bilge after the incident. Reporters were refused entry to the village.

Turkey's interior minister Besir Atalay has ruled out terrorism. He said the assault was most likely the result of a blood feud between rival families.

He has announced that eight people have been detained on suspicion of involvement in the attack.

Samantha Orobator: pregnant British woman might face execution in Laos

Phonthong prison,Laos,Orobator

Phonthong prison, Laos

In August of last year a British woman, Samantha Orobator, 20, was arrested at Wattay airport in Laos. It is alleged by Laotian authorities that she was in possession of 680 grams of heroin.

The amount of heroin she is accused of possessing exceeds the statutory minimum for the death penalty in Laos.

Ms Orobator, who is five months pregnant, is presently incarcerated in Phonthong prison awaiting trial.

The prison is supposedly a women's facility. Questions have been raised by campaigners about how Ms Orobator could have become pregnant in jail. There has been speculation that she may have been a victim of sexual assault.

Samantha Orobator,Laos

Those who have been imprisoned in Phonthong describe the conditions as extremely harsh.

An Australian named Kay Danes who was accused of gem smuggling spent time in the facility. She said she was subjected to mock executions, waterboarding and other forms of torture.

Ms Danes said the cells measure only 3x3 meters and inmates are locked up for most of the day. She described it as being like a sauna, with no running water and only floorboards to sleep on.

Photos of Phonthong prison beneath:

Phonthong Laos,Orobator

Phonthong Laos,Orobator

Ms Orobator is expected to go trial some time this week.

According to the British Rights Charity Reprieve, she hasn't been assigned a defence lawyer.

Reprieve lawyer Anna Morris said: "That has been our concern from the outset, that she has had no access to legal counsel before this week... We don't know that she is going to have any before any trial takes place and we are deeply concerned about the implications of that for her given her vulnerability, given her age and given her lack of familiarity with the system."

UK officials only learned of Samantha Orobator's arrest after she had been imprisoned in Phonthong prison for a number of months. Laos didn't bother informing the British, which is a breach of consular relations. The excuse they gave for not relaying the information was that they didn't have access to a fax machine.

It was only discovered that Ms Orobator was being held when Australian officials became privy to the information via another inmate being held in the facility.

Reprieve have described the trial as a farce - a show trial - and claim Laotian authorities wanted to get it over with before Ms Orobator could see a British lawyer.

If convicted she could face execution by firing squad.

British foreign office minister, Bill Rammell, said he intends to raise the case with the Laotian deputy prime minister when they meet in the UK on Thursday.

BNP's Simon Darby calls Dr Sentamu an 'ambitious African'

BNP,Darby,UK

Simon Darby, the deputy leader of the far-right British National Party (BNP), has it in for Dr John Sentamu, the archbishop of York.

Darby described the Ugandan-born prelate as "an ambitious African"... a "professional anti-British zealot" and "derogatory, condescending and arrogant." While he was at it Darby characterized Ugandans as 'spear throwers.'

Darby:

What I am saying is, if I went to Uganda and I went to a Ugandan village and said that the people there were genetic mongrels and that they had no right to their Ugandan identity I would be picking out spears for days.

This was part of Darby's over-the-top response to comments made by Dr Sentamu.

The archbishop said that: "You don't have to be a member of the BNP to be clearly English, and it is quite a mistake to suggest that everybody who wants to affirm Englishness affirms that narrow thinking. This 'bloodless genocide'? I think that is just language which is beyond belief."

Dr Sentamu made the statement following outlandish racist remarks by BNP leader, Nick Griffin, who said that black and Asian Britons "do not exist" and that they should be collectively referred to as "racial foreigners."

Photobucket

BNP leader: Nick Griffin

Griffin also said that immigrants who call themselves British are denying the "indigenous British" their own identity... something he described without irony as "bloodless genocide."

BNP leadership uses quaint blood and soil terminology in all seriousness. The British identity with many years of immigration from all quarters of the globe isn't 'ethnic' so much as cultural and national. Ethnic markers to determine national identity in 2009 just demonstrate how backward BNP thinking really is.

The anti-Fascist group Searchlight said the comments coming from BNP leadership destroyed the 'mask of moderation' the party has been trying to put up.

Searchlight:

The Euro election campaign has only just started and already Nick Griffin's mask of respectability is melting away. These vile comments reveal the true face of the BNP... Even someone as internationally respected as Dr Sentamu is not immune from their poisonous slurs.

BMI in-flight maps: Israel not included

BMI,in-flightmap,color

Angry Israeli passengers have been complaining that in-flight maps on BMI's London-Tel Aviv service don't identify Israel.

The city of Haifa appears on the moving maps, but listed under its Arabic name, Khefa.

Photobucket

Indignant Israeli officials have accused the airline of "trying to hide the existence of Israel."

The explanation offered by the airline is rather less dramatic. BMI took over planes from a bankrupt charter company [BMED] which flew to many Muslim countries in the Middle East. The maps for those flights were designed to point out sites relevant to the interests of the passengers.

A BMI spokesperson has denied any political agenda. He said the maps should have been deactivated before the planes were deployed on the Tel-Aviv line, but "due to a technical error this did not take place."

Predictably there have been accusations that BMI was catering to the sensitivities of Muslims. Yigal Palmor, an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman, said that BMI "... risked being erased from the list of acceptable airlines for Israelis."

It is most likely the in-flight maps were a technical error as claimed and not part of some 'political agenda' - after all the airline invested in a Tel-Aviv line.

As it turns out larger planes have been scheduled by BMI to take over the twice-daily flights to Israel anyway - so maybe now irate Israelis will be able to cool their jets.

Angela Merkel in undies on Bruno Banani ad

angela Merkel,underwear ad

photo : Victoria Bonn-Meuser , AFP

AFP reports on a German ad featuring Angela Merkel. The ad shows a mock-up of the German Chancellor wearing only a mauve bra and pantie set. Behind her are other German politicians posing in boxers.

You might assume this could be an off-beat vote-catching ad put out ahead of the upcoming elections, but actually it's an ad by the underwear company Bruno Banani. The accompanying caption reads "we are giving everything to increase demand."

The ad campaign is a play on the "cash-for-clunkers" idea that allowed customers to trade in their old cars. In this case the catch-phrase is "The country needs new undies." Customers will get a $7 discount on new underwear if they bring in their old ones - meticulously laundered presumably.

The ad isn't the only example of German politicans showing skin. In the town of Bodman-Ludwigshafen there is a controversial tryptich by the sculpture Peter Lenk called "group-sex relief." It features prominent politicians and corporate players in various states of undress and completely nude. One panel stars German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder laughing and grabbing each others private parts. Link here for story and photos.

The underwear ad has certainly been attracting attention. People in West Berlin have been taking pictures of the billboards with cameras and mobile phones.

A middle-aged man expressed approval of the ad: "Brilliant. It's a positive signal for the economic situation in Germany." How exactly Merkel-in-undies is a "positive signal for the economy" is a vague concept at best.

Another person said it was always welcome to have something amusing to look at while waiting for the bus.

Some German publications have a slightly kinky interest in Chancellor Merkel, which is odd considering that by her own admission she is not terribly interested in fashion and has been criticized for her outdated hairstyle and clothes. But when she showed up at the Oslo Opera not so long ago with a plunging neckline, it became a major talking point with the pics showing up even in fairly staid newspapers.

Although the ad isn't a party promotion, it does send a subliminal political message, intentional or not. Merkel and CDU aren't exactly progressive. The ad with a stripped down Chancellor conveys an edgier image. But it also comes off as slightly ridiculous - fodder for sarcastic commentary - no doubt especially on the part of those who aren't fans of CDU policy positions.

Merkel isn't talking about the ad. A spokesperson said: “The chancellor’s office does not want to comment on the campaign.”

Judy Shepard responds to 'hoax' allegation on Rachel Maddow

Photobucket

Judy Shepard appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show last night. She took issue with the claim by representative Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) that it was "a hoax" to describe the attack on Matthew Shepard as an anti-gay hate crime.

Foxx has been opposing the expansion of Federal hate crimes legislation and is on record saying that calling the murder of Matthew Shepard an anti-gay crime is "a hoax that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills."

Judy Shepard countered Foxx's distortions on the Maddow Show:

Well, you know, attacks of lesser consequence, I guess, have been said about Matt since the beginning, and in 2007 when it passed the House, the same sort of vitriol' was spoken from the floor as well. I did not ever expect it to be called a hoax. Anyone who has done research into what happened to Matt knows it was a hate crime, although technically we couldn't prosecute it that way because there was no hate crime law in Wyoming and no Federal hate crime law protecting sexual orientation. So we couldn't call it a hate crime, but it was.

Apparently Foxx has since offered some clarification by saying that "hoax was a poor choice of words."

Judy Shepard responded to the clarification by saying that representative Foxx was "apologizing for semantics, not her ignorance."

Radio host Jay Severin suspended by WTKK: calls Mexicans 'criminaliens'

Photobucket

Talk radio host, Jay Severin, has been suspended by WTKK in Boston for making offensive comments about Mexicans. According to WTKK's program director, Grace Blazer, the station is in "profound disagreement with the host's remarks."

In the course of a discussion about swine flu Severin called Mexican immigrants "criminaliens."

Responding to a caller who complained about Mexicans receiving health care, he described hospital emergency rooms as "condos for Mexicans."

The Boston Herald also quotes Severin as saying: "So now, in addition to venereal disease and the other leading exports of Mexico – women with mustaches and VD – now we have swine flu."

Another piece of wisdom: [Mexicans are] "the world's lowest primitives."

He doesn't just smear Mexicans, he spreads it around. In 2004, he said that he regarded American Muslims as a fifth-column out to "take over the country."

When a caller proposed that Americans befriend Muslims, Severin countered with "I've got an idea, let's kill all Muslims."

After the recent remarks he's been put on 'indefinite' suspension.

WTKK kept him around for years when he was engaging in similar hate talk. It will be interesting to see if it will be any different this time around.

Windsor sexcapade while tourists watch

Photobucket

A couple in their early 30's who had a few too many, decided to have sex on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

They chose an area of lawn near the Garter Tower, stripped off in full view of tourists, hotels, pubs and shops... and then got busy.

The 'session' lasted for around 15 minutes, giving time for guests at the nearby Harte and Garter Hotel to come out to take a leisurely look.

Tourists were spotted taking pictures and videoing the action.

Irish Guard sentries whose barracks overlooks the lawn offered vocal encouragement from their windows. People on the same roadside also joined in.

It didn't appear to bother the couple that they had become the afternoon's star attraction. When a Range Rover showed up with Royal Protection Squad officers they obeyed the order to cease and desist. They were put in cells overnight and given a caution for outraging public decency.

The police described the pair as "respectable people with respectable jobs."

Apparently the Queen was in residence when this was going on. It's unclear if she was aware of the excitement.
