A memorial to George W. Bush is in the works - one that San Franciscans can contribute to every time they flush.
The Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco is going to ask voters to change the name of a local sewage plant to the George W. Bush Water Pollution Control Plant. The Commission wants to provide "an appropriate honor for a truly unique president."
When asked about the proposal, White House spokesperson Dana Perino said she wouldn't dignify it with a response.
The proposal has been received with enthusiasm by the majority of San Francisco residents queried. Chances are good it might go through - after all in 2004 San Francisco voted 83% Democrat.
If passed, the renaming would take effect on January 20 when a new president is sworn in. Rather like a forty-one gun salute, supporters of the plan intend to celebrate the inaugural with a synchronized flush of toilets - sending a flood of sewage in the direction of the now-named Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant.
A spokesperson for the plant raised an objection to the renaming proposal - not about the name being proposed - but about the costs the whole thing would involve.
